Le 3 juin 1835, Pierre Rivière, un jeune paysan normand de vingt ans, égorge à coups de serpe sa mère, sa soeur Victoire et son jeune frère Jules. Il prend la fuite et erre plusieurs semaines dans les bois avant de se faire arrêter. A peine emprisonné, le meurtrier, que la plupart des témoins décriront comme un garçon au comportement étrange, voire sous les traits d’un idiot, entreprend la rédaction d’un épais mémoire, texte d’une stupéfiante beauté, véritable autobiographie dans laquelle il expose les raisons qui l’on conduit à son geste : délivrer son père des « peines et afflictions » que lui faisait subir son épouse depuis le premier jour de leur mariage... « pauvre » fou ? Le débat opposera longtemps magistrats et psychiatres. Tourné avec des non professionnels dans la plupart des rôles principaux — recrutés parmi les paysans de la région — René Allio construit une oeuvre singulière et forte qui restitue toute l’épaisseur de cette énigme.
On 3rd June 1835, Pierre Rivière, a young 20-year-old Norman peasant slit the throat of his mother, his sister Victoire and his younger brother Jules, with a billhook. He ran away and roamed the woods for several weeks before being arrested. Just imprisoned, the murderer, described by most witnesses as a boy acting strangely, even as an idiot, set about writing a thick, amazingly beautiful kind of journal, like an autobiography where he explains why he did what he did : to free his father from the “suffering” he was subjected to by his wife since the first day of their marriage… A freakish criminal or a “poor” lunatic? The debate will oppose psychiatrics and magistrates for a long time.
Shot with a non-professional cast for most of the leading parts — recruited among the local farmers — René Allio made a singular and powerful film that renders all the depth of this enigma.
